AI has caused many students to become unmotivated due to the popularity of the artificial intelligent websites or apps being used for research. These apps allow students to simply type in a question and all the readership will be done for them in a matter of seconds. Having multiple resources and having answers come through quickly can also be an effect like deep deep analysis, independence, reasoning, and many other skills that students have been struggling with. In 2025 through 2026, San Diego Unified had 92% using artificial intelligence which is a high raise for this to be a big population of use. To better understand AI usage, I went to ask 2 caver students about the overall thoughts about this problem.
Zaria, a Senior at San Diego High School mentions “How it’s a tool no student should be using unless it’s research or school subject” and that “We also shouldn’t allow this to be an everyday use of a tool and every student shouldn’t be dependent on whether students should be using their own cognitive abilities”. She states how it’s a “big problem” now and if teachers don’t teach “different motor skills” this will become a huge problem for future generations.
A senior here, had also stated about the AI effects of all high schooler students. They mentioned how students don’t usually see the “development” in their brain that’s making them “powerless” and students should realize this will make them “unsuccessful workers” for their future. As they realized that anyone around their surroundings during classes it’s a lot of “addiction” and “habit” that is something the school should really “manage” and be “more stricter” to have students be prepared for the “real world” and that’s what they think for a better outcome now and in the future.
As we see technology rising up with artificial intelligence and being common with student’s’ learning, at the same time critical thinking is a useful skill that involves very open minded ideas. As this device continues to be used in education, there should be a need for students to connect purposely with what they use to learn.
Question: Do you think AI is better than SDHS students think critically?
Yes
No
