Parent Teacher Student Association, short for PTSA, is a nonprofit organization from the community for the community and is known for raising funds to support teachers, students and the school. But overtime it has declined to the point of dissolution. For a number of reasons PTSA has decided to begin the process of disbanding the organization at San Diego High.
PTSA has shown a noticeable decline in community participation from students and parents from all grade levels except seniors due to the fact PTSA is closely connected to Grad Nite. In addition to being incredibly senior, PTSA rules are incredibly strict and require lots of paperwork which hinders it from supporting San Diego High School to its full ability. PTSA is also often overshadowed by Alumni and SDHS foundation for them being pillars of the school and taking over many events.
PTSA has gotten its funds by fundraising, membership fees, and even food loyalty checks. They have supported staff and students through applications, grants and even helped fund our very own San Diego High Journalism Club, with $3,300 dollars, for our Minneapolis trip. After years of struggling to meet the engagement mark, going into debt before being able to make a profit at the start of each year and restrictions from funding rules PTSA has decided to disband. The end of PTSA presently will leave its responsibilities to ASB and the SDHS Foundation such as Grad Nite. Its remaining funds will be disbursed. How it will be distributed is not yet publicly known but will comply with Title 16 (Gender Equity in funding).
On behalf of the San Diego High Journalism Club we say thank you and goodbye to SDHS PTSA during the conclusion of our school year.
