The San Diego High School boys’ varsity lacrosse team is working through the middle of its season with a focus on improvement, communication, and building momentum as it heads into the final stretch of games.
One of the biggest changes players have noticed this year is better communication on the field compared to last season.
“Our communication is a lot better than last year’s team,” Sebastain Douglas said. “We all work together like a family. We are not afraid to tell each other when we mess up or when we do something good.”
Even with improvements, players say there are still things to fix before playoffs, especially slowing down on offense and limiting fast break goals.
“We tend to rush our play on offense,” Douglas said. “We need to slow down, move the ball more, and not give up easy goals on fast break goals”
Despite some setbacks, the team feels like it is starting to build momentum as the season goes on.
“I think we’re building momentum most definitely,” Reyes said. “We learn more about each other every game and take positives from tough losses.”
Varsity player Sebastian Douglas described the team this year as disciplined and focused on setting an example for younger players.
“Disciplined,” Douglas said. “We’re a senior heavy team, and we try to set a good example for the younger guys.”
Both Gustavo Reyes and Sebastian Douglas also highlighted teammates who stepped up this season.
“Landon surprised me the most,” Douglas said. “Nobody expected him to come out his senior year, but he got called up to varsity and has been doing really well.”
Varsity player Gustavo Reys pointed out Jared Martin’s growth.
“He has really improved since last year. You can see it on the field; he works hard every game.”
As the season continues, seniors are also taking time to reflect on their final year playing high school lacrosse.
With a few games left, the team is focused on finishing strong and continuing to improve as a unit.
