The San Diego High Boys Varsity Lacrosse team opened its season with a 14-10 win over Bonita Vista High School. After being tied 8-8 at the end of the third quarter, the Cavers managed to score six goals in the fourth and kept Bonita Vista to only two goals in the end.
Senior Sebastian Douglas said the team was looking forward to this opening game.
“It was exciting,” Douglas said. “It was just awesome being out there on the field with all our friends. We were definitely waiting for this moment for a while.”
Douglas scored the first goal of the season.
“It felt good to be back out there,” he said. “I definitely could have done better.”
Senior Gustavo Reyes led the offense with eight goals and an assist, earning MVP. He said he felt confident despite having a lot of new players on the team.
“I was a little nervous because it’s a brand-new team,” Reyes said. “But I told people it was going to be a close game, and we were going to come out on top.”
Both seniors said the turning point came late in the game. San Diego High outscored Bonita Vista 6-2 in the fourth quarter.
“Our defense locked in,” Douglas said. “We were getting a lot of takeaways and fast break goals.”
Reyes said halftime helped reset the team’s focus.
“We had a good talk with the team,” he said. “We were going to come back strong and more physical.”
With strong leadership from the seniors, the Cavers are off to a great start and look to build momentum as the season goes on.
