The San Diego Cavers Wrestling team is now in CIF playoffs and is looking forward to multiple players on the team qualifying for the next round. Cavers Wrestling has made a strong push this season with an even and balanced roster featuring strong athletes across the weights. More typically, wrestling teams have only a few successful athletes, but this year’s squad has many competitive members. The 25-26 Caver Wrestling team is led by head coaches Cesar Chavez and Robert Dooley.
Coach Dooley started coaching a couple of years ago, and said that the jump SDHS has made shows a big improvement. Caver’s wrestling has not been competitive in the past, and it has taken a couple of years to but this year they are regarded as a very strong team.
Dooley said, “This year we are better than we have ever been, sometimes teams have one or two guys that tank their teams, but this year, we are equal all around, this year everyone on the team is qualifying for CIF.”
That’s an incredible achievement. On the one hand, wrestling is an individual sport where each player fights to qualify for CIF. People don’t typically talk about the entire team qualifying for CIF in wrestling. But this year, the 25-26 Cavers finds everyone on the team qualifying for CIF,
Senior Isaiah Rocha said, “I feel confident because all the work my teammates and I put into working all off-season to be prepared for the season, all the hard work is what gives me the confidence to come into CIF ready to compete.”
Coach Dooley praised all of his athletes but wanted to give a shout out to Dakota Kawczynski. “Dakota is such a hard worker, motivating her teammates whenever mistakes are made, always working hard in practice to help her teammates get better.”
