Following the announcement of the final roster, the SD Cavers girl’s lacrosse team held its first official practice of the season, shifting from individual competition during tryouts to building team chemistry and coordination on the field.
Sophomore Sophy Long describes the energy entering practice as enthusiastic and positive.
“We were all really excited to see each other again and play together,” Long said. “If felt really positive”
While the overall mood was upbeat, players faced early challenges. Long said one passing-and-sprinting drill initially caused confusion.
“They did a demo, and it was really fast,” she said. “But once we figured it out and communicated, it actually got really fun.”
Communication is one of the team’s primary goals this season. According to Long, the team aims to improve on-field coordination and strengthen communication compared to last year.
New player and goalie Leilani Salas Jr. said the first practice brought understandable nerves.
“I was nervous and scared of getting hit with the ball,” Salas said.
Despite being new to the sport, Salas said the team atmosphere felt welcoming and supportive. She described teammates as encouraging and helpful during drills.
Players also named areas for growth, including improving non-dominant hand control, catching consistency and overall communication. Coaches emphasized teamwork through group drills and continuous interaction during practice.
Compared to last season, returning players said they felt less anxious and more confident stepping onto the field, signaling growth in both skill and comfort level.
With returning leadership and new athletes joining the roster, the first practice revealed a team focused not only on improving technical skills but also strengthening unity. As the season begins, players say communication and collaboration will decide their success moving forward.
