Long assignments, challenging exams, and extended essays have left some students in the IB program at San Diego High School recently facing a rigorous schedule that tests both their academic skills and endurance.
While the IB curriculum is designed to prepare students for college-level coursework, some students say balancing the workload with extracurricular activities and personal responsibilities can be difficult. Others note that academic pressure is not limited to IB, as many students struggle even in regular class schedules. Here’s the thing: some students do like it because they feel it encourages them to learn more. A senior at SDHS who has more than 4 IB classes in his schedule states, “It greatly depends on your desire to learn. If you want to learn stuff, it won’t be that challenging for you.” That’s what IB meant for. It is a program that helps you gain a variety of skills by doing homework and participating in classes. As mentioned in the San Diego Unified District, it develops emotional and social skills for those who are between three to 19 in a rapidly globalizing world.
Unfortunately, with artificial intelligence tools becoming more accessible, some students question whether using programs such as ChatGPT makes managing lengthy assignments easier. Which destroys the idea of IB and decreases efficiency. In conclusion, IB is worth it if you want to pursue an education and get a higher G.P.A. “You get a 5.0 GPA for each of the A’s in IB classes,” says a senior at SDHS. “I think that’s a big advantage of IB classes.” Which encourages students to join that program, and why not work among the best?
