The San Diego Cavers boys wrestling team has had a phenomenal start, being undefeated so far in the 25-26 season. Pinning the competition so far, the Cavers have placed first in every tournament this season.
The team roster is 20-athletes deep with talent and led by head coaches Cesar Chavez and Robert Dooley. Alexander RiveraDominguez shares insights into the team, the coaching staff, and the program more generally. “The season is going pretty good because our coaches have taught us a lot and we work every day,” RiveraDominguez said.
When athletes speak well of their coaches, it is a good indication of a strong team. That they are so successful only adds to the evidence that the team is doing things well. “I’m just a wrestler, we listen to our coach, our team captain, Shabaz, and we all work together to reach our goal, and we as individuals have our own goals,” RiveraDominguez adds.
While we might expect to find such a team-oriented mentality in a sport like football or soccer, it can be surprising in individual sports like wrestling. It speaks highly of RiveraDominguez and his fellow Cavers.
But don’t let that humble tone fool you. RiveraDominguez—and the entire Caver community—is enjoying being undefeated thus far in the season.
We can all agree with him as he added, “We plan to stay that way.”
