SDHS Girls Soccer Builds Chemistry During Younger Team Season

The San Diego High School girls soccer team is adjusting to a younger roster this season, focusing on growth, chemistry, and development as league play gets underway next week. After losing several key players from last year’s squad, the 2026 team entered the season with more underclassmen stepping into new roles. Despite the changes, players say the team has steadily improved as the first game approaches. “We definitely lost a lot of our best players last year, but we’ve improved a lot,” said Ella Carrico, a varsity forward. “It just feels like we’re still growing together.”

Team chemistry has been a major positive this season, according to players. Carrico said the supportive environment has helped the team stay connected both on and off the field. “Everyone is so nice to each other, and we always have each other’s backs,” Carrico said. “That support really stands out.”

Mayzee Penick said the younger roster has created a different experience compared to past seasons, but the team’s confidence has increased as league games begin. “We’re definitely a younger team this year, but we’re developing really well,” Penick said. “Starting league next week, we’re going to be playing a lot better, and everyone’s gaining confidence.” Penick added that while the previous past teams had more experience early on, the team’s culture remains strong.“The intensity is the same, and the vibes are the same,” she said. “The team spirit this year is really positive, and the younger players are adding a lot to that.”

As the season kicks off, players say building connections and continuing development remain the top priorities for the team. Caver fans should watch the first Girls Soccer game next Tuesday, January 20, at 6:00 pm at Mira Mesa Marauders.
